About the location

MAINSTONE

Bishop's Castle 5.5 miles; Clun 6 miles; Ludlow 16 miles.

A E Houseman once wrote that Shropshire was "the quietest place under the sun" and today the county remains something of a rural idyll, recognised as one of the least crowded and most peaceful regions in England.

Located in beautiful countryside known as the Marches, the hamlet of Mainstone is located on the border between England and Wales. This charming settlement is less than six miles from the fascinating market town of Bishops Castle, situated in the outstanding natural beauty of the south west Shropshire Hills. The town of Bishops Castle boasts a medieval castle mound, a wealth of timbered buildings - including the unusual Elizabethan House on Crutches - heritage trails and an impressive choice of quality shops, pubs and restaurants. These include the famous Three Tuns Inn Brewery, which produces traditional real ales. The town enjoys weekly markets, festivals - such as the famous Annual Real Ale Festival - and regular fairs including one at Michaelmas. The area is ideal for walking, cycling and for touring the Welsh Marches whilst the towns of Ludlow and Shrewsbury are also within easy reach to provide some cosmopolitan contrast.
